Bob McCannon was one of the most influential media educators in recent times. He was a pioneer in the media literacy/education field and he had the ability to cross all genres with his unique approach to teaching media literacy/education. His recent passing was a huge loss to a host of people as well as to the media reform movement as a whole. His teachings, however, are timeless.
As a journalism major and an individual who is very interested in the media and what it has to offer; I believe Bob McCannon has a very interesting and valid point. Too many people look for the negative side of the media and try to inform others by educating them on the negative aspects. However, if it weren't for the media - where would this society be? McCannon is right when he says that the media needs to be looked at in a positive way and media reformers should educate people on this issue. As McCannon mentioned, Media Education understands that you can use media as a tool and in today's society with a "propaganda centered big media monopoly" - media reformers are needed to educate and keep the public well-informed on the actualities of the media.
Media education is extremely pertinent in our technologically advanced times. Just as the media has kept many aspects of this world "in-check" by advertising information to the world, we as citizens also need to keep the media "in-check" if truth and factual information rather than propaganda. The only way to do this is to educated ourselves. I agree with his views on media education vs. media literacy and his desire to help reform by education. I agree with using a positive viewpoint because if one just teaches by showing the negative aspects of the media it could result in anti-media rather than what can we do to make media as useful as possible and ethical.

McCannon?s views of the ?big media monopoly? and media education are very interesting. As he mentioned, solving issues is not possible if you do not have a just coverage of the information and the media corporations are limiting this possibility. I think media networks shall be independent in order to function properly and play their role in society. McCannon?s idea of using education with a positive and entertainment approach will be more efficient in instructing people and promoting the needed reforms in the field.
By highlighting both the positive and negative aspects of the media, McCannon does an excellent job in trying to find ways to reform media. His realistic approach to the current set up of media dominated by corporations and monopoly provides a solid framework to what reform can really look like in the future.
McCannon's explanation of the importance of understanding the Media really gives you a strong sense of what the Media is all about. I like his emphasis on the positive examples and explanations of the Media- in too many of my social science and communication classes we are exposed to the shortcomings and unethical predicaments of the Media. I support McCannon's quest to educate people on the Media and its role in society and believe that education is the only way to ensure a Media that will continue to evolve and flourish into the future.
